  1. I am a non-German speaking parent with my son attending the German School in Richmond in Year 1. I too believed that it would be a bilingual education my son would receive here but this claim only really stretches as far as the prospectus. Practically all school work & absolutely all homework from year 1 onward are purely in German. Please avoid this school unless your grasp of German is at least conversational otherwise you will struggle as a parent as I have.

  2. New Bilingual school opening this September for Reception children in Wandsworth, London: Anglo Portuguese School of London. DfE school – No fees! Find out more: https://angloportugueseschool.org/en/

As a DfE (Department for Education) school, we will follow the British National Curriculum and our children will be assessed under the British system. We receive additional funding from the Portuguese government for the teaching of Portuguese.
Our curriculum is broad and inspirational, catering to children of all language levels of proficiency. Our first Reception cohort will have 3 qualified teachers: 2 to deliver British EYFS curriculum and 1 to deliver Portuguese language curriculum within an immersion model.

  3. Living in London provides wonderful choices of schools, namely international schools. However, parents need to be cautious when comparing schools who bill themselves as “bilingual.” Very few schools are truly bilingual (where half of the classes are in English, half in a foreign language). Also, the level of English taught in many of these schools can fall short of what is being taught in the British system. However, this may not be a problem for families who can continue to support their child’s learning at home. Our child attended Andre Malraux for primary and then moved for secondary to LIL Wembley. We enjoyed Andre Malraux greatly but it was definitely not a bilingual school (and we did not expect it to be bilingual). Following primary, our needs changed. Even though there was a guaranteed space available for our child, we did not want to continue to South Kensington. We knew the level of English provided at South Kensington would not meet our needs and quite possibly fall short. We preferred LIL Wembley because we knew the level of English would be demanding for a native speaker, more in line with the British school system, while still allowing our child to continue in the French track. LIL Wembley has a truly bilingual structure for both primary and secondary. Plus, importantly, LIL Wembley has provided our child with the choice of either continuing on the French track (doing the Option Internationale du Baccalauréat / International Section) or moving to the IB (International Baccalaureate) program which is more easily recognized in many anglophone universities. Regardless, parents need to really clarify which curriculum is being taught and what are the key milestones expected (example: when do they start reading, writing, studying sciences, etc.).
